Album description: Alternative Folk Rock
aa
Album Notes: Once upon a star, there was a boy who met a girl and a girl
who met a boy. That is to say... they met each other. The sun circled by day and
the moon and the stars circled by night and upon reaching destination after
destination something left them feeling well but not fully right. Until one
night while traveling their eyes met each other along with the light and they
realized it's the 'to' that stands in between the star that we've left and the
star upon which we've arrived that asks for our attention and if given, delivers
us contentment and thus makes all the difference in this thing we call
'life'. -CKH 03/19/2017

Album Notes: Heartsleeve (2012) is the debut album by The Night Light Chasers. The band is based out of Hastings, MN. About this record...
aa
We "reach for the stars". It is a pursuit that teaches US that it is
the pursuit itself that matters, more so than the destinations WE arrive at and
pass along the way. It is a pursuit that introduces US to a great many
individuals, some who prove to be profoundly kind and supportive, some who WE
forge bonds with that will never sever. As the years roll forward and entrances
and exits of so many continue to pile upone each other, a special reverence for
this journey called life and inclination toward rightward actions inspire OUR
hearts again and again to sing.
aa
You know them when you see them
When you see them you will know
They wear their heart upon their sleeve
As if it were a badge bestowed...
aa
To all the heartsleevers out there, past, present and future, thank you for
being true to being you. May OUR individual pursuits continue to keep US close
and crossing paths until this shared taxi ride ends... -CKH, 03/06/2012

description: Finely

Album Notes: "The best kept secret in the galaxy!"
aa
"What Means So Much", The Fountainheads second full-length record
release was recorded throughout 2007 in both the band's studio, Manor Lane
Studios, located in Hastings, MN and the famous Pachyderm Studios located in
Cannon Falls, MN. The spirited foursome claim the south-eastern edge of the Twin
Cities metro as their home and the sounds on this record illuminate the listener
with both the hustle and excitement of modern metropolis (Warning Signs,
College-Town Blues) and the soul sweeping grace of the wind across the prairie
in big sky country (What Means So Much, A Cold, Cold Wind Is Gonna Cry). This is
a traveling record and The Fountainheads cover a lot of ground both in style and
content. You'll hop a greyhound to California (505), spend a rainy day in Europe
(Spain) and trace an orbit in outer space (Tell Me Where You Want Me). In fact,
you'll even hear a tinge of American highway alt-country interspersed throughout
the record (Last Winter, Trying To Work It Out). The piano steals the spotlight
every four or five tracks and delivers brilliantly (Maybe You Were Mine, Going
Right Back To You, Stuck In The Middle Of This Year). Power-chord laden rock'n
roll aims for the heart and hits its target (Just Because I Told You So, Prove
It To Me). And before the disc stops spinning there is still time for a
discourse on the races we run that can't be won (Speed Of Light) and a steady
promise from a steady heart (I'll Be There To Catch You If You Fall).
aa
From heartache to devotion, from rock 'n roll to ballad, from solos that thunder
to lyrics that spark wonder this record shows you up and down and then turns it
upside down. It is a record that reminds us that in life it is not our arrivals
from destination to destination that make the notes, but rather the movement in
between that matters most.
aa
Buy this record. It promises to become one of your favorite highway companions.

CD Review - The Fountainheads - What Means So Much
Posted on July 1st, 2008 by Riftyrich
By Nelson Heise
aa
The Fountainheads new disc “What Means So Much” is just pop gold. Every
track finds a little Beatles flavor toppled with more modern sounds of The Minus
5 and Ween. Not that long ago I was asked to review The Fountainheads first
self-titled EP and it was good, but it wasn’t a complete polished package.
That is not the case for the new disc, great riffs, nice harmonies and really
strong melodies. The Fountainheads are lead by Hornisch brothers who come with a
battery of personal experience of love in your early twenties, and it is hard
not to reflect on that life not so long ago.
aa
“Tell Me Where You Want Me and I’ll Be There For Sure” sounds like a lost
hit from the early sixties that this reviewer can’t help but think of that
damn Tom Hanks flick “That Thing You Do” and its song of the same title.
“Speed of Light” is a more rambunctious song that leads nicely into the next
track “College Town Blues” which is a personal favorite that reflects on the
trials and tribulations of college life, if I could only have those problems
again. “I’ll Be There to Catch You If You Fall” is a laid back country-esqe
track that has a sweet little violin track. My only complaint, the titles of the
tunes are too damn long, but I’ll live with that if they keep cranking out
these cool tunes.

CD Review - The Big Takeover - New York, New York - Issue # 63, Fall 2008:
The Fountainheads - What Means So Much (Hornisch Records)
aa
I remember reviewing brothers Chris and Tom Hornisch on their eponymous
Fountainheads release. (Brad Harvey did their older Urban Sun for us.) And the
bits of Beatles, Oasis, Robyn Hitchcock, and Rutles back then remain -like the
crying George Harrison slide guitar on "Warning Signs", or the
slightly nasal vocals Oasis offers (without gutteral accent, just boyish charm)-
but they seem so understated now! This is classic ringing/jangle guitar '60s pop
with modern production, like that place R.E.M. took The Byrds on "Feeling
Gravity's Pull" or "Maps and Legends." There're even similar
small country-isms, like on "Last Winter." The songwriting scores
little hook points as the attention to craft is strong (part of the '60s too
many miss!), and the sorrow over lost ladies is palpable. - Jack Rabid, The

The Fountainheads - Self-Titled
by Nelson Heise
aa
The Hornisch brothers can definitely crank out some catchy, melodic pop songs in
the vein of the Beatles, and they even crank out some hard rockers on their
self-titled debut album. There are enough addictive hooks to make you start
singing along on the second listen, but I can't say I was 100 percent blown
away. One thing I struggled with is the vocals. They came across to me as
nasally and at times irritating, which is a shame because I enjoyed the lyrical
content.
aa
Here's the deal though: When there's more appealing than not about an album,
it's a good disc.
aa
Like I said before, the Hornisch brothers possess strong songwriting abilities.
Tracks like "Under the Radar," "Out of Place" and "It's
Misery They Like to See" are hard to resist, and the lo-fi vibe of the disc
makes them feel warm. I almost forgot to mention the stellar song "Hard to
See" with the clever little line: "Oh I didn't want to do it, but I
did it anyway," which is universally relatable. I'm also a fan of brother
songwriting teams, since that's how my band works - and that wins good marks
from me. All in all, I really liked what I heard, so don't take my critique of
the vocals to heart because the songs as a whole outshine the vocal
performances. I'm just one guy; maybe I'm in the minority and the vocals are
totally digestible.
aa
Either way it's a damn fine disc.

The Big Takeover New York, New York - Issue # 60, Spring 2007:
The Fountainheads - Self-Titled (Hornisch Records)
aa
This brother duo, helped by guests, admits loving The Beatles and Oasis. I hear
the latter on "Out Of Place", "Falling" and "It's
Misery They Like To See", with meaty, glammy guitars. But on vocals, it
isn't as much two (other) brothers Gallagher I hear, but two older Beatle
lovers. Both Tom and Chris Hornisch sing and sound like Lennon, only thinner
like his disciple Robyn Hitchcock ("Under The Radar") and especially
his friend Neil Innes ("All In Your Head") of Bonzo Dog Band and
Rutles. So it's surprising to find these boys live in St. Paul, MN rather than
Blighty. but like other fab four fans, fastidious Fountainheads (Ayn Rand fans?)
are better at crafted studio pop more than Oasis's raucous rock, with piano plus
lugubrious guitar breaks in the middle eights (Brit for "bridges").
It's modest, friendly, with low-budget spunk, however traditional.

If you go to Urban Sun's website and click on the "Bands We Like"
link, you'll be taken to a promotional site related to defunct skiffle quartet
the Beatles. Always wise to steal from the best. The group also borrows from
R.E.M. and Oasis, and bears a coincidental resemblance to greater-Illinois power
poppers the Shoes, who were recording little pop gems on a four-track in their
living room back in the mid-'70s.
aa
In the Beatles tradition, three members of Urban Sun pull songwriting shifts.
"Shine Like the Stars" comes from the pen of bassist Chris Hornisch,
whose nasal, vaguely Liverpudlian singing puts tenderness and snottiness into
effective equilibrium. As the simile in the song's title indicates, Hornisch
knows to keep it simple. Another lyricist might have gone with "shine like
that movie where that foreign actor with the big nose played the crazy concert
pianist," but that might not have sung well. Hornisch also turns in some
McCartney-inspired melodic bass runs, while the guitarists mainly keep it crisp
and clean. The drummer lays back in admirable service to the song's unassuming
beauty. The bridge seems imported from another song, but them Beatles did that,
too, and it's a real nice bridge. It even seems to levitate a bit, not all the
way to the stars, but in that general direction.

By their photo these Minnesota boys look like they cut this between punching in
at the warehouse. The homemade vibe's loud and clear as are the influences -
bits of The La's, garage, and 1960's beat. With stronger production and stricter
quality control (the out of tune "Tweedle Dee" should have been
shit-canned), Urban Sun could pull off the best DIY since Black Vinyl Shoes. -

Notes:
Urban Sun's debut release recorded at Pachyderm studios, located in Cannon
Falls, MN a somewhat sleepy town situated about an hour South of the Twin
Cities. The studio enjoyed the national spotlight in the mid-nineties after
producing a number of landmark albums including Nirvana's "In Utero".
"The Sound Situation" was captured in just three days and is anything
but sleepy. The fast pace of the session is evident in the 13 song collection of
fresh energetic performances. The record was actually recorded twice after the
original sessions were lost when lightning from a passing storm caused some
technical failures just as the record was wrapping up. Two weeks later the band
regrouped and recorded the material for a second time, the band's familiarity
with the process yielded time to record an extra song, the blistering "My
Flavor" that closes the album.
aa
The record introduces the world to Urban Sun, two pairs of brothers who met in
2001 upon discovering their common admiration of The Beatles' vast catalog of
pop rock genius. A year of rehearsal yielded roughly 25 original compositions,
half of which were chosen to represent the band on "The Sound
Situation". The album was self-produced by the band along with
producer/engineer Jeff "the Captain" McCusker.

Album Notes: The debut recording by songwriter Christopher Hornisch.
While searching to join or start a new rock 'n roll band after the break up of
his college band "In Other Words", Chris paused to make his studio
recording debut at the now defunct Oarfin Studios in Minneapolis, MN. "In
Other Words" bassist, Dan Bass (pronounced like the fish ironically) was
recruited to supply the bass guitar and also lays down the accordion parts on
"Baker Street" and "Mystery Of Life". Todd Fitzgerald, then
the head engineer at Oarfin, engineered the record and assisted with the
production (he now operates the Twin Cities studio Winterland Studios).
aa
The track "Baker Street" was featured on the worldwide broadcast radio show "Coast to Coast AM".
